How to Set Up Customer Check-in on an Android Tablet

Kiosk mode turns an Android tablet at your front desk into a self-service check-in station. Clients tap the screen to check in instead of scanning a QR code with their phone. The screen resets automatically after each client.

Enable kiosk mode

  1. Go to Turns & Checkins in the navigation
  2. Click the gear icon to open Turn Tracker Settings
  3. Under Customer Check-in, toggle Enable Front Desk Kiosk on

A QR code and kiosk URL appear with setup instructions.

Set up the tablet

Follow the setup guide shown in the settings panel:

  1. On the tablet, open the Camera app and scan the QR code. Tap the link to open it in Chrome
  2. In Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, tap Install app, tap Install
  3. Close Chrome, then open the app from the Home Screen — it launches in full-screen mode with no browser bars
  4. Lock the tablet to the kiosk app so clients can't exit (on Android: Settings > Security > App pinning)
  5. Place the tablet at the front desk, plugged in and facing clients

You can also copy the kiosk URL and open it on the tablet manually instead of scanning the QR code.

Requirement: Android tablet running Android 8.0+ with Chrome.

How kiosk mode differs from QR check-in

Both use the same check-in interface — clients see the same three options (appointment check-in, specific tech, or anyone available). The differences:

  • Auto-reset — after a successful check-in, the screen automatically returns to the home state after 5 seconds. No "Done" button to tap
  • Idle timeout — if no one touches the screen for 45 seconds, a "Still there?" warning appears. After 15 more seconds with no interaction, the screen resets
  • Full-screen — runs as an installed app with no browser bars or navigation

Which to use: QR code, kiosk, or both

  • QR code — free, no hardware needed, works with any phone. Best for salons that don't want to buy a tablet
  • Kiosk — looks more professional, better for clients who aren't comfortable scanning QR codes. Requires an Android tablet
  • Both — many salons place a tablet on the counter and print a QR code nearby as backup. Clients choose whichever they prefer
