How to Handle Split Payments and Tips

Clients often pay with a mix of methods — part cash, part card — or want to add a tip. Here's how it works in checkout.

Split a payment across methods

There's no "split payment" button — you just make multiple payments on the same ticket:

  1. Open a ticket in Checkout
  2. Tap a payment method (e.g., Cash) and enter the partial amount
  3. The remaining balance updates automatically
  4. Tap another method (e.g., Card) and pay the rest

You can combine any of the six methods: Card, Cash, Check, Gift Card, Store Credit, or Other (Venmo, Zelle, etc.). Keep adding payments until the balance reaches zero.

Applied payments show in green on the ticket. Non-card payments can be removed with the X button if you made a mistake. Card payments can't be removed — use a refund instead.

Add a tip

  1. On the ticket, tap Add Tip
  2. Enter the tip amount (quick buttons for $5, $10, $20)
  3. Tap Add Tip to confirm

The tip shows in green on the ticket and is included in the total.

Split a tip between staff

When a ticket has multiple providers (e.g., one tech did the manicure, another did the pedicure), you can split the tip:

  1. Tap Add Tip — the split view opens automatically when multiple providers are on the ticket
  2. Choose how to split:
    • Split Evenly — divides the tip equally
    • Split by Service — divides proportionally based on each provider's service total
    • Or enter a specific amount for each provider directly in the input fields
  3. Confirm the split

Tips from the card terminal

When a client tips on the card reader, the tip is charged to their card automatically. If the ticket has multiple providers, a Split Tip screen opens so you can allocate the tip — the amount is locked since it's already been charged.

Edit tips after checkout

Tips can be adjusted after the transaction is complete:

  1. Go to Transactions (under Insights in the navigation)
  2. Click a transaction to open the detail view
  3. Click Edit next to the Tip line
  4. Adjust the split amounts and save

Add a discount

  1. On the ticket, tap Add Discount
  2. Choose the type: % Off or $ Off
  3. Choose what to apply it to: the entire ticket or a specific item
  4. Optionally add a reason (e.g., "First visit," "Loyalty")
  5. Tap Apply Discount

Discounts show in rose on the ticket. To remove all discounts, tap Add Discount again and choose Remove All Discounts.
